The Council of Confusion

Samuel heard something. The voice that spoke to him was clearly heard but not clearly identified. He knew someone was speaking, but he did not know who it was. (Eli must have had a deep voice for Samuel to mess that one up)

Although Samuel was dealing with an audible voice from God, we can still misplace or mischaracterize God’s voice even when we do not hear Him with our ears.

We know that the Holy Spirit leads us, but we also know there are other voices that try to point us in directions away from God.

So just like Samuel, we may at times mistake God’s voice for someone else’s.  This journey will be one of training ourselves to listen for God beyond the other voices of confusion.

To begin this journey of discernment, acknowledging to God that we are here to listen is the first step. Most people will not spend time speaking to someone who is unwilling to listen, so why would we expect something different from God?

Samuel replied, “Speak, for your servant is listening.”

This is an invitation for God to speak and a declaration that we want His will over our own.

Repeat the same prayer Samuel prayed as many times as you can today. I wonder what unique things He might say if you stay open to hearing His voice.
